Our Cancer Care team offers holistic support for patients, connecting them with resources across North Mississippi Health Services and beyond. We wrap support around patients and families during their cancer journeys. Our team includes social workers and registered dietitians. We host monthly support groups and annual Camp Bluebird.

Social Work

NMMC Cancer Care social worker talks with an older man Throughout their cancer journey, our social workers help patients who need assistance with transportation, financial burdens, emotional issues or other problems related to cancer treatment. They can offer assistance with:

  • Wigs and head coverings
  • NMMC Cancer Care Food pantry
  • Referrals to local resources
  • Counseling

Cancer Care Patient Fund

Overseen by the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi, this fund assists patients in need and their families with the support they need to continue treatment. Assistance can include pain and anti-nausea medications, nutritional supplements, transportation and other necessities. See your oncology social worker for more information.

Nutrition Counseling

Cancer and cancer treatments may affect the way food tastes and smells. They can affect appetite and the way the body absorbs nutrients. Our registered dietitians help to support weight maintenance, address weight loss and ease nutrition-related side effects caused by cancer treatment. They can offer assistance with:

  • Nutritional supplements
  • Side effect discomforts related to food
  • Nutrition deficits and weight loss
  • Recipes to increase calorie and protein intake when needed
  • Tube feeding introduction for PEG tubes including administration options
  • Personalized regimen for PEG tube nutrition

Survivorship

From the day you are diagnosed with cancer, you are considered survivors. NMMC Cancer Care offers opportunities for patients and their families to build their capacity for the life-long cancer survivorship journey.

Camp Bluebird

Three women wearing leis build birdhouses at the 2023 Camp Bluebird held at Tombigbee State ParkHeld annually, Camp Bluebird offers a day of entertainment, arts and fellowship for adult cancer survivors, including those newly diagnosed, in treatment or in remission. The 2024 camp will be Sept. 28 at Tombigbee State Park near Plantersville.

Cancer Journey Support Group

Free to cancer survivors and their caregivers, the support group is led by oncology social workers. These groups allow cancer patients the opportunity to share common experiences, problems and solutions. They also provide an avenue for patients to talk confidentially with others who are coping with and surviving cancer.

  • In Tupelo, the support group meets 2-3:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month in the NMMC Hematology Oncology Break Room.
