The Power & Possibilities of Cancer Rehabilitation
Fighting cancer can be tough on the body. Our team is trained to help cancer patients improve physical activity and endurance levels, decrease pain and edema and get back to a normal life.
With cancer rehabilitation, our goal is to help our patients get back to a normal, active life. We focus on helping them reach the highest functional level possible and to return to work when appropriate.
Our cancer rehabilitation team consists of a lymphedema specialist, speech therapist, occupational therapist and physical therapist. We can address problems caused by side effects from cancer treatments, including:
Muscle weakness
Limitations in range of motion
Chronic fatigue
Balance/gait problems
Lymphedema
Swallowing dysfunction
Pain
Cancer patients have an increased risk for lymphedema, an abnormal swelling that develops because of damage to the lymphatic system. We have a dedicated Lymphedema Clinic to help identify and treat patients who develop the condition. Lymphedema therapy at NMHS includes:
Specialized therapist
Certified in Vodder Method of lymphedema management
Treatment to facilitate the drainage of lymphatic fluid
Compression bandaging to prevent refill between therapy sessions
Education and exercises to enhance drainage and restore strength
For patients with mouth and throat cancer, difficulty with swallowing can develop. Our cancer rehabilitation team has a number of swallow therapy options including:
VitalStim, which uses electrical stimulation to strengthen swallowing muscles
Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular Stimulation, which uses stimulation on the throat
McNeal Dysphagia Therapy, which uses exercises to improve swallow pattern
