Flu Shots

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. There are two types of influenza (flu) viruses: types A and B. These viruses are responsible for seasonal flu epidemics each year. Some people, such as people 65 years and older, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at higher risk of serious flu complications.

Why should people get vaccinated against flu?

The flu can affect people differently, but during typical flu seasons, millions of people get the flu, hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized, and thousands to tens of thousands of people die from flu-related causes. The flu can mean a few days of feeling bad, or it can result in a more serious illness. For some, influenza can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death.

An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the risk of getting the flu or any of its potentially serious complications. Vaccination is proven to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illness, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death. While some people who get a flu vaccine may still get sick with influenza, flu vaccination has been shown in several studies to reduce severity of illness.

Tdap Vaccinations

All Mississippi students entering the seventh grade and all Alabama students entering the sixth grade are required to have a recent Tdap vaccination. These shots are available at some North Mississippi Medical Clinics and North Mississippi Health Services locations.

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccination provides protection against whooping cough (pertussis), a highly contagious disease that can be severe or fatal, especially in very young children. Infants who are too young to be vaccinated against pertussis must be protected by ensuring that adolescents and adults around them cannot carry the disease.
