Our Preventive Foot Care team, located on the fourth floor of the NMMC-Tupelo East Tower, provides nail care and education for individuals at high risk for foot issues, including those with diabetes or peripheral neuropathy.

At each visit we perform sensation testing and check pedal pulses via Doppler ultrasound to ensure adequate blood flow to the feet.

Proper Foot Care

Inspect your feet daily. If you have had prior problems, check them more frequently. If you see redness, swelling or feel increased warmth, stay off your feet. If this persists for 24 hours, check with your medical professional immediately.

  • Wash feet daily with soap and water, but do not soak. Check water temperature.

  • Dry feet thoroughly but gently (especially between toes) with a clean, soft towel

  • Rub feet with lotion every day, preferably after bathing

  • Wear soft, clean socks or stockings (preferably white, cotton socks)

  • Check socks for wet spots which may be a sign of irritation or a wound

  • Never go barefoot, even for a few steps! Wear recommended footwear

  • Shoes should be a thumb’s width longer than your longest toe with a wide toe box

  • Avoid shoes with open toes and open heels, unless otherwise recommended

  • Inspect shoes daily before wearing, feeling inside it with your hand

  • Don’t cut corns or calluses with knives or razor blades.

  • Avoid over-the-counter callus remover

  • After a foot sore heals, wear recommended footwear to avoid friction and shearing
