Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique used to treat persistent pain.

Dry needling is available by physician referral at North Mississippi Health Services' Outpatient Rehabilitation Centers in Tupelo, Amory and Eupora.

Dry needling is performed with a thin filament needle, which stimulates the underlying myofascial trigger points, muscle and soft tissue.

There are some similarities and many differences between dry needling and acupuncture. The most obvious similarity is that both techniques use solid filament needles to penetrate soft tissue. Physical therapists who perform dry needling do not use traditional acupuncture terminology or theories, but base treatment on musculoskeletal findings as well as impaired activities.

Dry needling causes changes in the soft tissue, primarily the muscle contracture or trigger point. Inserting the needle in the trigger point can cause changes that reduce pain. Dry needling decreases certain chemicals in the muscle called "inflammatory mediators."

Dry needling is a safe and effective tool in the hands of a skilled physical therapist. Treatment is delivered with clean technique and under the guidelines of OSHA regulations. Physical therapists who dry needle have a strong background in anatomy, biomechanics, physiology and clinical reasoning skills.
