Sleep Study
Today's technology is helping millions of people overcome sleep disorders.
NMMC Sleep Disorders Centers in Tupelo, Amory, Eupora, Iuka and West Point are equipped with the latest diagnostic tools and staffed by highly trained technicians and physicians.
You may be asked to spend a night or two at the Sleep Disorders Center for testing. A polysomnogram, or sleep study, is performed throughout the night in a beautifully decorated private room, complete with sophisticated equipment to monitor sleep patterns, breathing, heart activity and body movements.
During your stay, we will make every effort to maintain your regular sleep routine and make you as comfortable as possible.
Sleep studies are conducted in a homelike environment featuring ceiling fans, remote control TV, technologist call system (in headboard) and CPAP devices (on bedside table). Rooms have an individual temperature control.
The Control Room is the heart of the center, including computer-based digital study acquisition stations, reference manuals, video and audio monitors, Information System computers, telephones and fax machine. Technologists monitor patient activity and record and score the studies from the control room.
Once a diagnosis is made, our physicians will recommend specific treatment options for your sleep disorder.

What Happens Next?
I just had a diagnostic sleep study (First study)
- If you were diagnosed with sleep apnea, you will be prescribed CPAP therapy.
- If you have chosen a durable medical equipment (DME) provider, your prescription will be sent to that company within 1 business day of your study. Do not go directly to the company for service; they will not have the proper information they need to help you at that time.
- In most cases, after a diagnosis of sleep apnea, you will be scheduled for a return sleep study – CPAP Titration. The reason for this study is to determine the pressure you need on your machine and confirm you have the best mask. This study is not to see how well you are doing on your machine since the first study; you may return and not have your CPAP equipment just yet.
I just had a CPAP Titration Study (Second study/repeat from previous year)
-
If you have chosen a DME provider, we will send your prescription to that company within 1 business day of your study. We cannot send the prescription until the doctor interprets the study. Do not go directly to the company for service; they will not have the proper information they need to help you at that time.
-
Your sleep physician’s office will contact you to schedule a 30-day follow up appointment once you have completed your sleep study. During this visit, your provider will check your compliance with the prescribed treatment and address any issues or concerns you may have.
Durable Medical Equipment
If you are prescribed CPAP | BIPAP | oxygen therapy, you will need to pick a durable medical equipment (DME) provider. These local companies are included on our preferred list based on the excellent care they provide to their patients, but you may choose any DME provider. Please select a DME provider prior to your sleep study so your prescription can be sent without delay.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much will my sleep study cost?
A: You will receive your estimated out-of-pocket cost when you pre register at Longtown Medical Park.
Q: What charges should I expect to be billed for?
A: You will receive bills from the following: Pulmonary Consultants or Neurology Consultants of North Mississippi (the provider who ordered the study and interpreted the study); NMHS for the sleep study; and Pulmonary Consultants for your visit to go over the results.
Q: What if I do not have insurance?
A: At the time of registration, the cost for the sleep study will be explained. All physician costs are handled separately. If you are unable to pay for your sleep study, the patient access specialist will explain your options,
such as applying for financial aid, Medicaid or payment plans. Self-pay patients will receive a sizeable discount off the standard price.
Q: Will my insurance cover the sleep study?
A: Sleep Disorders Center staff will obtain an authorization from your insurance (when necessary). Registration will verify your insurance coverage and provide you with the amount that your insurance will cover. You may have a percentage of payment co-pay or deductible due. This will be your out-of-pocket cost. If your insurance denies authorization or you do not meet your insurance’s medical policy, you will be notified by Sleep Disorders Center staff prior to your study. In this event, your provider may order a different type of sleep study that will be covered by your insurance.
Q: What if I have already paid toward my sleep study but I cancel or the study type is changed?
A: Payment will be refunded by check as long as there are no outstanding balance accounts with NMMC. If your study type is changed, the amount paid will be applied to the new study type. Any remaining balance will be refunded by check.
