Summary
At North Mississippi Plastic Surgery, body contouring plans are individualized to match the procedure to what your body actually needs.
Body contouring procedures help address stubborn fat, loose skin and changes that can occur after pregnancy, weight loss or aging.
Two of the most common procedures discussed are liposuction and tummy tuck. While they are often mentioned together, they address very different concerns.
What liposuction does
Liposuction is a procedure that removes stubborn fat in areas that have been resistant to weight loss. Common treatment areas include:
- Lower abdomen
- Flanks
- Thighs
- Arms
Liposuction is designed to remove fat. It does not remove excess skin or tighten muscles.
When liposuction may not be enough
If a patient already has extra skin or reduced skin quality, removing fat alone can sometimes make the final appearance less smooth. In these cases, liposuction alone may not produce the best aesthetic result.
That is when more comprehensive procedures are considered.
What a tummy tuck addresses
A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, removes excess abdominal skin and tightens the core abdominal muscles. These muscles are often stretched after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
A tummy tuck can:
- Remove loose or hanging skin
- Repair muscle separation
- Improve abdominal contour
This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and is often an outpatient surgery, meaning patients go home the same day.
Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
Good candidates for tummy tuck are often patients who:
- Are at or close to their goal weight
- Have been weight stable for about six months
- Have loose skin or muscle separation
- Are finished with major weight changes. Being at a stable weight helps optimize long term results.
Recovery planning
Recovery is an important part of the overall outcome. Most tummy tuck patients can expect:
- Surgical drains for a short period
- An abdominal binder for support
- Aggressive compression for about six weeks
- No heavy lifting for six weeks
- Many patients return to non physical work in about two to three weeks, depending on job demands.
The importance of support after surgery
A strong support system plays a key role in recovery, especially after procedures requiring general anesthesia. Patients often benefit from help with daily tasks during the first one to two weeks after surgery.
Staying active with light walking is encouraged, but assistance with lifting, meals and household tasks helps protect healing and results.
Body contouring after weight loss surgery
For many patients, weight loss is a first step. Once patients reach their goal weight and maintain stability, body contouring procedures like tummy tuck, breast lift or liposuction can help refine results.
Timing matters. Stable weight allows your surgeon to plan for the best possible outcome.
Start your body contouring plan
The best results come from choosing the right procedure for your body and your timing.
