Podiatrist Vern Christensen, MD, shares eight easy ways to keep your feet healthy, beautiful and ready for your favorite summer sandals.

As summer approaches, it’s time to trade in boots and sneakers for sandals and flip-flops.

But before you step out in open-toed shoes, it’s important to give your feet the care and attention they deserve. After months of being tucked away, your feet might need some extra love to be summer-ready. Here’s a simple guide to preparing your feet for the warm season.

1. Exfoliate for Softness

Winter can leave your feet dry and calloused, making exfoliation a must. Use a pumice stone, foot scrub or exfoliating foot mask to slough off dead skin cells. Pay special attention to the heels and balls of your feet where rough patches tend to form. Doing this weekly will help keep your feet smooth and soft.

2. Moisturize Daily

Hydration is key to maintaining supple skin on your feet. After exfoliating, apply a rich foot cream or natural oils like coconut or shea butter to lock in moisture. For deeper hydration, wear moisture-locking socks overnight after applying lotion.

3. Trim and Shape Your Nails

Unkempt toenails can not only look unsightly but also lead to infections and ingrown nails. Trim your nails straight across and file the edges to prevent snagging. Keeping them short and clean will ensure your feet look neat and well-groomed.

4. Treat Your Cuticles

Your cuticles serve as a barrier against infections, so avoid cutting them too aggressively. Instead, soak your feet in warm water and gently push back your cuticles using a wooden stick. Apply cuticle oil to nourish and protect the nail bed.

5. Keep Feet Fresh and Odor-Free

With the rising temperatures, sweaty feet and odor can become a concern. Use foot powders or sprays to absorb excess moisture and keep odor at bay. Wearing breathable footwear and moisture-wicking socks can also help prevent excessive sweating.

6. Protect Against Infections

Public pools, showers and beaches are breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi. Always wear flip-flops in shared spaces and keep your feet dry to avoid athlete’s foot and other infections. If you notice any unusual redness, itching or peeling, treat it promptly with antifungal creams.

7. Apply Sunscreen

Feet are often forgotten when it comes to sun protection. Apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet and toes before heading out to prevent sunburn and premature aging.

8. Choose the Right Footwear

Sandals and flip-flops are summer staples, but they don’t always offer proper support. Choose sandals with cushioned soles and arch support to prevent foot pain and discomfort. If you plan to be on your feet for long periods, consider wearing closed-toe shoes or supportive sandals to avoid strain.

Final Thoughts

Taking care of your feet now will ensure they look and feel their best all summer long. With regular maintenance and a little extra attention, your feet will be soft, healthy and ready to step into the sunshine with confidence!
