A Day In The Life Of A Primary Care Physician

Summary
Dr. Craig Moffett, a dedicated family medicine physician, exemplifies compassionate, relationship-based care by coordinating treatment across hospital, clinic and long-term care settings to improve the health and well-being of his close-knit community.
Each year on National Doctors’ Day (March 30), we pause to recognize physicians who dedicate their lives to caring for our communities. From early mornings to late evenings, our doctors provide not only medical expertise but also compassion, reassurance and leadership for patients and families. Their commitment strengthens the health of our region every single day.
For Dr. Craig Moffett, no two days look the same. As a family medicine physician with North Mississippi Health Services, he travels between rural Mississippi communities with one goal in mind: providing access to superior health care by strengthening relationships with his patients.
In describing his role, Dr. Moffett often compares primary care to leadership on the football field.
“Primary care providers are like your quarterbacks — your team captains. I’ll never know as much about the heart as cardiologists or as much about the kidneys as nephrologists, but I can coordinate the passes to each of their specialties to make sure our patients are receiving the best care and that everyone is on the same page.”
In addition to seeing patients at Maben Medical Clinic, he also cares for patients hospitalized at North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora and residents at Webster Long Term Care, which is housed inside the hospital. Most mornings begin around 5:30 or 6 a.m., when he starts his rounds at the hospital.
Small-Town Hospitals Are Special
At NMMC-Eupora, Dr. Moffett begins his day by checking in with nurses and making rounds on patients. He collaborates with nursing staff and nurse practitioners to ensure every patient remains aligned with their treatment plan.
On any given day, patients may be managing chronic conditions, recovering from surgery or participating in therapy. In a rural community where access to health care can be limited, it is common for Dr. Moffett to treat patients he has known for years or to see the same individual in multiple settings depending on their condition.
“What’s so special about this place is that it’s such a small and tight-knit community." Dr. Moffett said. "Small-town medicine means that we can really work together to give our patients the most personalized care.”
Once Dr. Moffett finishes his hospital rounds, it is time for him to go to the clinic.
A True Family Environment
When patients walk into Maben Medical Clinic, they walk into a family environment. Dr. Moffett cares for neighbors he sees at the grocery store and families he runs into on weekends. He believes that care rooted in relationships leads to better outcomes.
“Patients are more likely to tell you what’s going on with them. They’re more honest with you," he said. "Their compliance is higher when they have a good relationship with you. It also shapes your care plans. You get to know your patients and understand their fears or financial issues. It provides reassurance to know that whether in clinic or the hospital, they’ll see me.”
Through the connected network of North Mississippi Health Services, Dr. Moffett is able to bridge access barriers for patients who cannot immediately travel to Tupelo. Shared technology allows him to message specialists directly or coordinate care quickly when needed.
“We have a shared computer system," he said. "I can also call specialists to coordinate a patient's care should the need arise."
Serving Patients at Every Stage of Life
Dr. Moffett also cares for geriatric patients at Webster Long Term Care. For him, this work represents an opportunity to give back.
“Our elders have so many stories and so much to teach us. They’ve given so much to society throughout their lives," he said. "If I can help in their last years to make life more meaningful, more focused on quality, more connected socially and better supported, that’s an amazing thing to be able to do.”
From early morning hospital rounds to clinic visits and long-term care, Dr. Moffett’s days may vary — but his mission remains constant: strengthening relationships, coordinating care and serving his community with compassion.
