NMMC-West Point Dedicates ICU in memory of Dr. Ed Miller
WEST POINT, Mississippi – North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point recently dedicated its Intensive Care Unit in memory of the late Edmund “Ed” A. Miller Jr., MD.
Dr. Miller served as an internal medicine physician in West Point from 1982 until his death on Dec. 9, 2021. From the time the current hospital opened in 1985, he was a catalyst and leader for the ICU team.
“It is our privilege to honor Dr. Miller with the dedication of our ICU in his name,” said Barry Keel, administrator at NMMC-West Point.
“Dr. Miller was a true giant of a leader in the evolution of our ICU over his 40-year career at NMMC-West Point. He told me on more than one occasion over the years that critical care was his passion. It is only fitting that now his name will forever be enshrined outside our ICU in his honor.”
Additionally, a Totten oak donated by Mossy Oak Nativ Nurseries was dedicated to Dr. Miller’s memory outside his former clinic.
“Over its long history, West Point has been blessed to have many exceptionally gifted and dedicated physicians, and Dr. Miller will always be among the top of that list,” said Bill Sugg, president of Mossy Oak and president of the NMMC-West Point board of directors. “We wanted to make a gift that reflected his impressive and unique legacy.”
The Totten oak is a rare hybrid of a swamp chestnut oak and an overcup oak. It was one of thousands of seedlings that Mossy Oak cultivated from acorns collected from a swamp chestnut oak near the banks of Tibbee Creek.
“Much like Dr. Miller, this individual (tree) has very unique characteristics that set it apart from the rest,” said Dudley Phelps of Mossy Oak Nativ Nurseries. “It is our wish this unique individual tree will remind us of Dr. Miller’s priceless contributions to our community for many years to come.”
Dr. Miller graduated from University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Brett, and five children, Lila June Miller; Heather Miller Usry; Edmund McLean "Ned" Miller, MD; Archie Anderson Miller and Guy Robert Miller, and three grandchildren.
