NMMC to Offer Free Smoking Cessation Class
TUPELO, Miss.—North Mississippi Medical Center will host a free smoking cessation class for individuals who are trying to stop smoking or using other tobacco products.
The class will meet virtually at 5:00 p.m. Mondays, January 17-February 21.
The first session involves discussion of health history, habits and smoking patterns. A baseline measurement of each participant’s carbon monoxide level will be done at the first session and monitored weekly for progress.
“The smoking cessation classes will be in the format of group counseling and will be held virtually,” said Angel Justice, director of NMMC’s Advanced Practice Clinician Fellowship, who leads the program. “We will cover topics like FDA approved medications and potential side effects, nicotine withdrawal symptoms and strategies to help you reduce and quit tobacco altogether. Participants do need to know that we do not prescribe medications for smoking cessation. They would need to follow up with their provider for prescriptive medications if desired.”
Class instructors also follow up with class participants for one year following the class to offer encouragement. To register, call (662) 377-3270 or 1-800-THE DESK (1-800-843-3375).
