TUPELO, Mississippi—Six area students are participating in North Mississippi Medical Center’s Physician Shadowing Program during July.

Seth Buchanan of Saltillo, a student at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama. Buchanan aspires to be a physician but has not yet determined what specialty. Experiencing the various medical specialties offered at NMMC is helping him narrow his choices.

Holly Chase

Holly Chase of Baldwyn, a student at Mississippi State University. “I have had the same goal in mind for many years but have had few opportunities such as this to see what doctors from all different specialties encounter daily,” says Chase, who aspires to be a radiologist. “I’m excited for what I might learn from these physicians about their careers and why they chose their positions in health care.”

Eli Hannon of Guntown, an MSU student. Hannon is interested in becoming a cardiologist but says he is using this experience to gain knowledge in many different areas of medicine.

Caroline Kercheval of Meridian, a student at MSU. Kercheval has interests in geriatric medicine and oncology. “I want to use this as a learning opportunity to further my own knowledge within the medical field,” she says.

Physician Shadowing group

To participate, pre-med students must have completed their junior year in college and aspire to a career in medicine. Each student receives hourly compensation, a lab coat and support materials. The Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi (www.nmhsfoundation.org) funds the program through the Dr. P.K. Thomas Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund.
