T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability Director Kasee K. TUPELO, Mississippi – Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi has donated two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to the T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability, located on the Mississippi State University campus in Starkville.

The Health Care Foundation made the donation on behalf of North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point and its affiliated Starkville clinics, NMMC Cancer Care-Starkville, North Mississippi Urology and Starkville Medical Clinic.

 “Our mission at North Mississippi Health Services is to continuously improve the health of the region we serve,” said Steven Blaylock, president of the Health Care Foundation. “Making sure these potentially life-saving devices are available safeguards our friends, families and neighbors.”

An AED delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart to potentially stop an irregular heartbeat and allow the return of a normal rhythm following sudden cardiac arrest. If not treated within minutes, sudden cardiac arrest quickly leads to death.

“Knowing that we now have life-saving support on both floors of our building brings all of us peace of mind,” said Kasee K. Stratton-Gadke, Ph.D., NCSP, LP, director of the T.K. Martin Center. “Our building is an active place with many clients and students who have complex medical needs.  The hospital’s generous gift makes it possible for us to feel comforted knowing we can respond quickly to a cardiac emergency.” 

The T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability provides comprehensive, multi-disciplinary evaluations and services to remove limitations through the application of assistive technology, evidenced-based practice, training and educational supports.  The comprehensive nature of the center serves individuals across the lifespan, allowing them to participate in educational, vocational and leisure activities to the fullest degree they choose, while continuing to advance research in disability.
