Pranjal Desai, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist with Women’s Group of West Point, has written a chapter in the book, “Medical Robotics,” which is due out in coming months. Hysterectomy is one of the most common operations performed in gynecology. In the last 15 years, the da Vinci robotic system has gained widespread acceptance in gynecology because of enhanced visualization and excellent dexterity compared to conventional laparoscopic techniques. Dr. Desai’s book chapter examines the challenges that accompany setting up and running a robotic program, including needs assessment for initial acquisition, business strategy, challenges to run a program efficiently, learning curve for the surgeon and staff, and more.  In addition to North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point, da Vinci robotic surgery is available at NMMC hospitals in Tupelo and Amory.

Dr. Desai joined the Women’s Group in January 2020. He earned his medical degree from Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College of Gujarat University in India, where he completed a residency in general surgery.  In 2015, he completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, New Jersey, an affiliate of the Atlantic Health System. He also holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
