Telehealth is a way for doctors, nurses and other health care experts to provide real-time, face-to-face care from a site far from the patient. You get the specialized care you need without having to travel long distances. You also get earlier access to appointments.

You go to your local clinic or hospital, as you would for a normal appointment. A nurse will go with you to the telehealth exam room and gather information to assist the provider during the visit. The provider will start the visit once the nurse has completed patient history, blood pressure, temperature, etc.

In almost every case, health insurance coverage includes telehealth. Telehealth care charges apply to insurance, co-pay and deductible like any other medical service.

Yes. A telehealth consult gets the same attention to privacy and confidentiality as face-to-face care. It follows the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) rules. The consult is done through a secure and private live video feed that is not saved and can never be replayed.

Referral from a primary care provider is necessary to see many specialists. Ask your provider about the possibility of telehealth for your health care needs. Once referred, the specialty clinic will contact you to set up the appointment at the nearest telehealth site.
