Almaz Kurbanov, MD
About Me
Dr. Almaz Kurbanov is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and completed his general surgery residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree from Uludag University in Turkey in 2004.
His journey into medicine began in a deeply personal way. After earning a gold medal at the International Mathematics Olympiad, Dr. Kurbanov was involved in a serious car accident. While recovering from surgery, he became fascinated by the healing process. Though he had been accepted to Harvard University to study mathematics, he changed course and pursued a career in medicine.
“Helping people in moments of vulnerability and providing solutions through surgical skill felt like a greater calling,” Dr. Kurbanov said.
He later shadowed surgeons and worked in a vascular physiology research lab, which strengthened his interest in surgical innovation. Today, he focuses on advancing minimally invasive and robotic surgery techniques. He looks forward to expanding the robotic-assisted surgery program and enhancing access to modern treatment options across Mississippi.
