TUPELO, Mississippi—The University of Mississippi Medical Center General Surgery Residency Class of 2021-2022 recently presented Terry Pinson, M.D., with the Dr. Robert E. Schmieg Jr. Resident Appreciation Award.

The award was established in memory of Dr. Robert Schmieg, a trauma surgeon at UMMC in Jackson who died of stomach cancer in 2009.  According to Dr. Schmeig’s obituary, “He especially loved working with, training and mentoring surgical residents.” The residents who completed their studies in 2009 created an award honoring his dedication and contribution to their education, and each year since then, chief surgical residents honor the faculty member they feel was their biggest advocate.

In presenting the award to Dr. Pinson, chief surgical resident Dr. Ramola Panchal said, “Dr. Pinson embodies the principles of the Dr. Robert E. Schmieg Jr. Resident Appreciation Award. He is firmly dedicated and remains enthusiastic in resident training. He is a resident advocate, making sure we always feel welcome and are cared for. And finally, he takes the time to provide guidance and mentorship in both our professional and personal lives. We love training and working with Dr. Pinson during our rotations at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.”

Dr. Pinson, a general and bariatric surgeon with Surgery Clinic of Tupelo, joined NMMC’s medical staff in 1995. He is board certified in general surgery and has special interests in bariatric, gastrointestinal, minimally invasive and advanced laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Pinson holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Southern Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Caraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgery and American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery.
