Peters Retires after 38+ Years at NMMC
Pharmacist Jeannine Peters of Cancer Care recently retired after more than 38 years of service to North Mississippi Medical Center.
A 1979 graduate of Muscle Shoals (Alabama) High School, Jeannine earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in 1984. She started her NMMC career shortly thereafter in the hospital’s main pharmacy. In 2001, she earned her Pharm.D., also from Ole Miss.
When NMMC’s Pharmacy was decentralized, meaning pharmacists were staffed on specific units, Jeannine moved to 3 South to work with cancer patients. “Back then, all chemotherapy was administered on an inpatient basis,” she says. As chemotherapy began to be offered to outpatients, she transferred to Oncology Infusion—first on Garfield Street, then at 990 S. Madison and finally at Cancer Care on South Gloster Street.
Whatever the location, Jeannine’s role was to ensure high standards were met. “We want to make sure the right patients get the right medications in the right dose,” she says. For more than 22 years, she served on NMMC’s Institutional Review Board as a member, advisor and then manager.
Jeannine particularly enjoyed the challenge her career offered. “Hospital pharmacy evolved so much while I was there,” she says. “I was constantly learning, and there was something new every day. I feel like the Lord blessed me with my career—He put me right where I needed to be.”
Soon after retiring, Jeannine and her husband, Scotty, traveled with a group to Israel to explore the Holy Land. They also recently visited son Jason (wife Christine) and grandchildren, Jackson, 11, and Vivian, 5, in Savannah, Georgia. Their daughter, Rachel Morse, lives in Tupelo with husband Cole and daughter Lila Ray, 4. They are expecting their fourth grandchild in May 2023.
In addition to traveling, Jeannine enjoys reading and shopping, as well as helping Rachel with her store, The Olive Press. She is an active member of Harrisburg Baptist Church, where she enjoys singing in the choir and assisting with the children’s choir.
