NMMC Wound Care Names Dr. McComb Medical Director; Bids Farewell to Dr. Warlick
TUPELO, Mississippi – The North Mississippi Medical Center Wound Care Center and Hyberbarics is saying good-bye to a long-time colleague and welcoming an old friend into a bigger role.
Dan Warlick, M.D., is retiring after 12 years with the wound center in Tupelo on Sept. 30. Dwight McComb, M.D., a long-time physician in Amory, will expand his work in wound care by becoming the medical director for the Wound Center and Hyperbarics at the NMMC-Tupelo on Oct. 3. He will continue to serve as the medical director for the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center at NMMC Gilmore-Amory.
“We are so fortunate to have benefited from Dr. Warlick’s expertise as the center has grown over the past decade,” said David Friloux, system director, Acute and Outpatient Rehab for North Mississippi Health Services. “Dr. McComb’s experience in wound healing and deep connections to our communities will help continue providing the best patient- and family-centered care.”
When Dr. Warlick came to Tupelo, the center’s physician and nurse practitioner were seeing about 10 people a day, and hyperbaric oxygen treatments were underutilized. Now the center sees about 50 patients a day.
“It’s been a pleasure to see how the program has grown and been consistent,” Dr. Warlick said.
Dr. Warlick and his wife, Mona, are looking forward to spending more time with their two children and three grandchildren. They are planning an extended road trip to visit their children’s families in Seattle and Madison, Wisconsin, before settling down in Fort Collins, Colorado. Over the next few months, Dr. Warlick will be filling in for his colleagues occasionally as his family prepares for their big move.
“We loved Tupelo,” Dr. Warlick said. “I will miss the people I work with; I’ll miss my patients.”
Dr. Warlick earned his undergraduate degree from the Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln and his medical degree from University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine. He completed residencies at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and Southwest Michigan Area Health Education Center in Kalamazoo. He practiced general surgery for 24 years before focusing on wound care.
Dr. McComb has been an internal medicine physician in Amory for the past 18 years, most recently caring for patients at Amory Specialty Clinic. He has served as the medical director of the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center in Amory since it opened in 2007.
“The decision to take this step away from primary care was extraordinarily difficult,” Dr. McComb said. “I am excited about this new opportunity, however, and see it as a challenge to fulfill a need for patients in our region in a different way.”
Dr. McComb will join the team at the Tupelo wound center that includes nurse practitioners Richard Comer and Sandra Russell. He will continue to see patients at the Amory wound center on Wednesdays, where nurse practitioner Marlana McFarland practices as well.
“While I am saddened to see Dr. Warlick leave, I know he and Mona are excited to do some traveling and spend time with their new grandbabies. Change often brings mixed emotions and a little anxiety, but I have complete confidence that our wound care programs will continue to thrive under Dr. McComb as the new Medical Director of Tupelo and Amory wound care centers,” said Janet Lancaster, director of NMMC Wound Care Center and Hyperbarics in Tupelo.
Dr. McComb earned his undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University and his medical degree from University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He holds Physician Certification in Would Care from the American Board of Wound Healing.
He and his wife, Deana, have three children, Jamison, Will and Audrey Kate.
