NMMC to Offer Free ‘Music is Medicine’ Program
TUPELO, Mississippi—North Mississippi Medical Center will present “Music is Medicine: Touching Lives from Birth to Later Life” virtually at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. The free program will focus on the power of music as a therapy.
Featured speakers will be Brent A. Bauer, M.D., and Miss Mississippi 2022 Emmie Perkins of Hattiesburg.
Dr. Bauer is a consultant in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine and founder of the Integrative Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic. He will share his team’s journey in bringing music to the bedside at Mayo Clinic, as well as discuss results from his team’s clinical studies regarding how music affects the brain and other body systems in positive ways and benefits the healing process.
Perkins is a student at Mississippi State University in Starkville, where she studies public relations with a minor in music. She will speak about how music touches her heart and why she chose this topic for her Miss Mississippi platform.
The program, which is part of a Fireside Chat series moderated by Dr. Jeremy Blanchard, system chief medical officer for North Mississippi Health Services, will conclude with a question and answer session. “We have been doing virtual Fireside Chats for almost three years,” Dr. Blanchard said. “The idea is to share a medical topic in a conversational, insightful manner, capturing the humanness of what we do.”
