NMMC Represented at Medical Education Program in Chicago
North Mississippi Medical Center was well represented at the “Nipple Sparing Mastectomy: A Team Approach” medical education program Sept. 30 near Chicago. Participating were (from left) Dr. Benjamin Googe of North Mississippi Plastic Surgery, Dr. Shawna Wiley, teaching faculty with the Medical Education and Research Center of Illinois; and Dr. Danny Sanders and nurse practitioner Mylie Beane of NMMC Breast and General Surgery Clinic.
This program highlighted the latest developments in nipple sparing mastectomy, which allows for immediate breast reconstruction after removal. This procedure removes the entire breast through a small incision, saving the nipple, areolar complex and skin. Once reconstructed by a plastic surgeon, this gives the reconstructed breast a normal appearance, and the scar is hidden underneath the breast. Dr. Sanders and plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Buckley have been performing nipple sparing mastectomy at NMMC since 2016. Dr. Googe recently joined NMMC’s team and will be performing this procedure as well.
