Research has shown that the single most important predictor of happiness and a long life is having strong relationships. Health measures like heart rate and blood pressure can even improve with positive social interactions. If you’ve been following along with Small Steps for Better Health, you’ve already spent some time focusing on spending time with people who lift your spirits and making meaningful connections. Now, let’s focus on other ways we can strengthen our social connections for a happier and healthier life.
Just like our other Small Steps for Better Health, let’s break it down and make it simple and sustainable. Here are some ideas to get you started. Pick one and act today. If you try one and it is not a good fit for you, or you don’t make great connections right away, don’t get discouraged. Keep trying to find the best fit for your personality and interests.
- Attend a community event like a parade or walk.
- If you are a member of a spiritual or religious group, attend available services this week. Churches and religious groups often have many ways you can get involved and spend time with others.
- Volunteer for a local nonprofit. Many causes need volunteers to keep their work going. Helping others can improve your health, allow you to meet new people and increase your happiness.
- Volunteer at an animal shelter. Animal shelters are a great place to connect with other animal lovers and help animals in need.
- Take a course for fun at your local library or community college.
- Go to a local sporting event, music performance, lecture, art display or theater event.
Take it up a notch: Look for social opportunities that improve other areas of health, such as exercise groups and classes or healthy cooking classes.
Make it a goal to incorporate any of the above into your weekly routine. Prioritize your relationships and social network – it will go a long way in improving your physical and mental health.
