When we think about why health is important, often what it really comes down to is being able to be active and do the things in life that we enjoy, especially as we age. Performing activities like gardening, carrying groceries into the house, playing catch with your children or grandchildren, getting up and down by ourselves and others are key to enjoying our lives.
If you’ve been following along with Small Steps for Better Health, you’ve already made great strides in your health in many areas. Healthy mobility is one more way that we can keep our bodies healthy and moving in ways we want them to.
Limited mobility can be caused by many things, including joint restriction, nerve tightness and more. There are many ways to improve mobility, including regular stretching, yoga and strength training through a full range of motion.
For now, think about doing something for your mobility every day. It doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment – just five to 10 minutes of dedicated mobility work, ideally before a workout, can be enough.
If your mobility is limiting your activity or causing you pain, it may be time to ask your provider about a referral to physical therapy.
