The area's premier resource for obstetrical, gynecological, neonatal intensive care and routine newborn services is North Mississippi Medical Center's Women's Hospital in Tupelo. The freestanding hospital, which opened in 1986, offers cutting edge technology and services in an attractive, homelike environment. Throughout Women's Hospital, we offer family-centered care, whether the patient is a new mom, a newborn or a surgery patient.

Labor & Delivery

The NMMC Women's Hospital in Tupelo has been welcoming new additions to area families since 1986. Expectant mothers can labor, deliver and recover in the same private birthing room, which is both well-decorated and well-equipped. All birthing rooms, as well as the three operating rooms and two Cesarean section rooms, contain state-of-the-art technology to accommodate normal and high-risk deliveries.

Thanks to an advanced monitoring system, our physicians can easily monitor contractions, heart rate and other vital signs of 24 patients who are either in labor or under observation simultaneously from the bedside, nurses station or even their office computer.

Women's Hospital offers a variety of services for pregnant and postpartum mothers, as well as the Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic for high-risk pregnancies. Pregnant women can be monitored and observed in Outpatient Testing for a more extensive checkup than is available at a routine office visit.

Women's Hospital also offers prenatal classes for expectant parents.

Gynecological Services

The Women's Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient services for women in all stages of life. The gynecological surgery service is one of the busiest in the state.

Our surgeons perform all types of gynecological surgery, including laparoscopic hysterectomies, cesarean sections, bladder repair, tubal ligation, and laparoscopic, gynecological cancer and laser surgeries. The surgery suite contains three operating rooms, with full-time anesthesia coverage provided by staff anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists.

Several robotic surgical procedures are available at the NMMC Women's Hospital to treat gynecologic conditions including uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse and menorrhagia or excessive bleeding.

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) gynecologic oncologists now offer surgical and clinical services at NMMC. These board-certified UAB Medicine faculty members offer gynecologic cancer consultations, gynecologic cancer risk assessment, minimally invasive surgical procedures and access to cutting-edge clinical trials.

Golden Hour

The Golden Hour is the first time parents and baby spend together as a family. It is the time for introductions; the first “oohs and aahs” and the counting of fingers and toes. This bonding time for you and your baby is a once-in-a-lifetime event and needs to be celebrated!

We want to give you and your baby time together, uninterrupted, so you can get to know each other. We know you want to introduce your family and friends to your baby, and we encourage you to welcome them after you have had this time alone.

Studies show that the mother-child bond is critical for your baby’s ongoing growth and development. We are promoting skin-to-skin contact in the first hour of your baby’s life, as well as the hours and days to follow, to help the two of you get to know each other.

Benefits for Baby

  • Stays warmer
  • Becomes calmer, cries less
  • Maintains more stable blood sugar
  • Breastfeeds sooner, longer and more easily

Benefits for Mother

  • Stays calmer, boosts confidence
  • Increases mother/baby bond
  • Increases milk production

Mothers who deliver by Cesarean section can enjoy the same special bonding experience with their baby in the operating room. Immediately after a C-section birth, your baby will be placed in a baby warmer room within the OR for a quick assessment. During the remainder of the surgery, the surgical drape will separate your baby from the surgical site, and the nurse will ensure your baby is always in a safe place. Once you are transferred to your hospital bed after surgery, the nurse will place your baby back on your chest.

We will gladly help facilitate your feeding choice for your newborn, as well as assist you in any way possible to ensure that you have a wonderful experience in the birth of your baby. After discussion with your doctor, please let us know if you do not wish to participate in the Golden Hour or “skin-to-skin.”

Well Baby Services

As part of the Women's Hospital plan of family-centered care, pediatricians provide care for well newborns during their hospital stay. The physicians make daily rounds to assess each baby's health and to provide medical care as needed. Nurses provide reassurance and hands-on instruction in breastfeeding and infant care as moms make the transition from delivery to motherhood.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a specialty care facility designed to handle the extensive problems encountered by the premature or critically ill newborn. Board-certified neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, specially-trained nurses, respiratory therapists and pharmacists treat patients from throughout the region, whether they are born at the Women's Hospital or transferred by Carexpress Medical Transport for Kids to Tupelo from hospitals in outlying communities. Neonatologists provide medical care for sick newborn infants, who are born prematurely, are having difficulty making the transition from fetal life to life after birth or are suffering from congenital malformations or infectious diseases.

Lactation Services

NMMC Women's Hospital advocates breastfeeding as the superior choice of infant nutrition. International board-certified lactation consultants (IBCLCs) are available to help mothers better understand the benefits of breastfeeding and to learn feeding techniques and coping skills. New mothers have the option of meeting with a consultant either before or after delivery.

Newborn Follow-Up

The Newborn Follow-up visit helps identify problems that sometimes appear after a baby is discharged from the nursery and should be evaluated before the two-week checkup. The main goal is to identify jaundice, weight loss and other problems an infant might develop. Most infants return for a Newborn Follow-up visit within one to two days after discharge. A nurse will weigh the infant and make sure there are no feeding problems. A lactation consultant is available for any breastfeeding concerns.
