Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

A mastopexy, also called a breast lift, is a procedure designed to reshape the breasts and restore a more youthful position. It can improve breast contour, reposition the nipple and enhance overall balance without necessarily changing breast size.

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift reshapes the breast and moves the nipple to a higher, more natural position. In many cases, the size of the areola is also reduced to match the new breast shape. 

This procedure is commonly chosen by patients who notice changes in breast position or shape over time.

A breast lift can be performed on its own or combined with other procedures depending on your goals.

Breast Lift Options

Breast Lift Alone

A mastopexy without implants focuses on reshaping and lifting the existing breast tissue without increasing size.

This option may be right if you:

• Want a more lifted, youthful appearance
• Are satisfied with your current breast size
• Want to improve shape and nipple position

The procedure is typically performed as outpatient surgery and does not require drains. 

Breast Lift with Augmentation

A breast lift with augmentation combines reshaping with breast implants to both lift and increase size.

This procedure:

• Adds volume using saline or silicone implants
• Lifts and reshapes the breast
• Repositions the nipple for a more youthful contour

Implants are most commonly placed partially under the chest muscle, which may help improve contour and reduce certain risks. 

This option may be right if you:

• Want fuller breasts along with a lift
• Have lost breast volume over time
• Desire more upper breast fullness

Breast Lift after Implant Removal

Some patients choose to remove existing implants and restore a natural breast shape with a lift.

A breast lift after implant removal can:

• Remove implants
• Improve breast shape after volume loss
• Reposition the nipple
• Restore a more natural contour

After implant removal, a drain may be placed temporarily and specific post-surgical care instructions will be provided to support healing.

What to Expect During Surgery

Breast lift procedures are performed in the operating room under general anesthesia.

Incisions & Techniques

Depending on your anatomy and goals, your surgeon may use:

• Anchor (wise pattern) incision
• Lollipop incision
• Circumareolar incision around the nipple

These approaches allow the surgeon to reshape the breast and reposition the nipple for the best possible result.

Recovery & Healing

Right after Surgery

• A surgical bra is worn to support healing
• Dressings are typically left in place initially
• Some procedures may involve drains short term

Returning to Daily Life

• Avoid lifting more than 10 pounds for six weeks
• Avoid raising arms above shoulder level early in recovery
• Plan for about two to four weeks off work depending on activity level

Walking and light movement are encouraged to support healing.

Risks & Safety Considerations

Preparing for Surgery

Smoking & Nicotine Use

Nicotine reduces blood flow and can interfere with healing. Patients must stop smoking and avoid nicotine products for at least four weeks before and after surgery. 

Screening & Health Requirements

Patients over age 40 typically need an up-to-date mammogram before surgery. Earlier screening may be recommended based on personal or family history.

Follow-up & Ongoing Care

Follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor healing and ensure the best outcome.

Patients receive detailed instructions on wound care, activity and when to contact the clinic with concerns such as:

• Fever
• Increased swelling
• Redness or drainage from incisions
